The long term effects got better as America gained more acceptance and now Carlos and Smith are known as some of the most important people in human rights history. But not all effects were good his wife after nine years of FBI investigation, assaulted and not being able to find a job she took her own life. John, devastated by the loss of his wife found it even harder to find work due to depression he eventually played for the Philadelphia Eagles but his American Football career was cut short when he suffered a leg injury he then went on to play American Football in the Canadian leagues before retiring from Football. He then went on to be the Track and Field Coach for Palm Springs senior High School. Even to this day there are a ton of critics since the Olympics isn’t about politics he still gets his share of dislike but it's apparent that he definitely made an impact with his statue being in the gardens of San Jose State University where he studied. And a proposed movie about him, Tommie Smith, and Peter Norman. He has written multiple books about him and they bring a lot of insight to racism in America, he’s also had a lot of books written about him. Today however they refuse to speak to each other or be in public with each other frequently call each other liars, and take credit for making the protest possible from their rivalry that started during the Olympics. The last time John Carlos and Tommie Smith were seen in in public was in fact the funeral of Peter Norman who, just like John Carlos and Tommie Smith had a very hard life after the event even if he didn't contribute as much as them.
